DogLeggs for Charcoal the Guide Dog

Hi Schon,
I wanted to share my DogLegg story with the site.

My Guide Dog Charcoal, who is a Black Lab Female has had chronic calluses most of her life-and has had multiple surgeries. About a year ago, we had changed veterinarians and our new Doctor said he didn't want to do any surgeries unless he had too. He told Art and me that there was a product out there called DogLeggs and that he would get me the website. We left his office with hope and the DogLeggs website in our hands.

I placed my order for the DogLeggs and when i received them, i immediately put them on my then 9-year old Charcoal. Within 24 hours, i looked and behold, I could see a big difference in her elbows. Oh, how fortunate we are to have gotten this remarkable product for my girl. About a week after receiving the DogLeggs, we took her to Dr. Addams and he was very impressed at how the DogLeggs were helping Charcoal. Now, a year later, Charcoal will be ten in November and she wears her DogLeggs proudly and her elbows have absolutely no calluses on them.

Thank you Schon for this amazing product.

Brottsjo, Norwegian Elkhound, New Lisbon WI

April 22, 2007

In October of 2006, my 11 year old Norwegian Elkhound , Brottsjo, had a Mast Cell Tumor removed from his inner right elbow. He had licked it and it became infected, and was classified a Grade III … it was a very fast growing aggressive tumor that also ulcerated.  Grade III MCT is 50% likely to reoccur at the same site, and prone to metastasize.  The pathology report came back with clear margins and no mast cells had been seen in the lymph gland. We hoped that we had it beat.

Unfortunately in January of 2007, during routine petting and exam, I found a small cluster of new tumors right at the site of the surgical scar. I agonized over the wisdom of another surgery since by now he had turned 12, and we didn’t know if it metastasized. He seemed so healthy and vigorous, and  the vet and I both believed he deserved a 2nd chance. So we went ahead with the surgery… and he was able again to get all of it according to the pathology report and no lymph gland involvement . Unfortunately to close the wound he needed to do a sliding skin graft.

Regrettably, the graft failed, the skin died, and my dog needed yet another surgery just 10 days after the last one. The skin was debrided and he was ultimately without any layers of skin at all on his elbow. The area was almost 4 ½ inches long and 2 ½ inches wide. The bone was visible at the point of the elbow.  In addition the original incision for the graft broke down at the skin and needed to be resutured.  This awful wound would need to heal by Secondary Intention, which means it needs to granulate and then re-epithilieze..or plainly put, grow skin.

The veterinarian mentioned Dog Leggs would be needed to provide a way to bandage his leg as well as give him protection on this delicate area. I immediately called Schon to ask about this product… and we talked about what healing needed to be done before they could be worn. I took the measurements and placed my order.

Weeks 1-5 Brottsjo was wrapped with a total body and leg wrap of Vetwrap to try to keep the leg immobilized. He was on crate rest for a month.   He initially had two incisions that were very slow to heal and Schon didn’t want the Dog Leggs used until they healed.  The skin of the elbow had granulated nicely and was healing.

Week 6 The incisions were healed, but he had edema on his chest. We worried that we wrapped the body too tightly.  We tried wrapping just the elbow with the Vetrap but if it was tight enough to stay on, his leg swelled.  Now was the time for the Dog Leggs. The elbow was still healing and the sore area shrinking.

Weeks 7-11  We had just had it with bandages that wouldn’t stay put. I put on his Dog Leggs with a sanitary napkin inside to cushion the elbow and continued the moist treatment to the elbow. It was still healing. The The elbow was  gaining skin day by day and only had a small area left.  It was so nice just to have this very simple “bandage” change. He absolutely hated all that vetwrap , gauze and tape!  Dog Leggs have been a Godsend, enabling Brottsjo to live as normal a life as possible. He was able to lie out on our deck or take walks with us without worry of injury to the elbow.

Sadly , in spite of our heroic efforts, we found another MCT on his muzzle, at week 9 , indicating that the cancer did indeed metastasize.  Just two weeks later, he has numerous lumps, bumps and swollen  hard areas on his body  indicating a rapid spread of the disease. He stumbles and sometimes has a hard time getting his breath.  He is still fighting but quality of life is our focus now. Dog Leggs have had a big impact on his ability to stay active as long as possible. His spirit and great heart do the rest.  Strangely enough, the elbow is still creating new skin even as the rest of his body is becoming damaged.

I need to Thank you  Schon , for your great product that has made the last months of my dogs life as close to normal as possible.

4/26/07 -
Brottsjo passed away peacefully in my arms this morning in the back of my car. Andy, my son came along, and we crouched in the rain while the near tearful vet and his techs administered the lethal dose. Less than three weeks after discovering new tumors, it had been apparent that he had days, not months to live. He steadily seemed to lose ground and yesterday Brottsjo had stopped wanting to be with people and eating.  Last night began a new  crisis ,with his mast cell cancer running rampant over his healing body. The elbow was nearly healed but the histamines produced by the mast cells went to his throat this time, and it swelled terribly. He had trouble breathing for a time and I was afraid he would choke to death during the night. I administered extra antihistamines and eventually he was able to sleep calmly with even breathing. The whole right side of his neck, throat, face and lips even were affected. For the first night in months, he was unable to go upstairs, even with my help, so I made my bed on the floor and later the recliner to be with him... This morning, his gait was unsteady and he was unable to get up alone.   The very tip of his tail continued to wave feebly  at my attention.... but his breathing was labored  and he was resigned to accept his fate.

It is as if the world has stopped for me. I miss him already so much, especially his smiling face .   We tried our best, and failed. It was a cruel thing to happen to such a wonderful dog who would do anything for me..... .

Happy Corgi!

In December 2006 I placed an order for a pair of DogLeggs for my 8 year old Corgi, Bailey. Bailey developed a lick granuloma after we moved into a new home in 2002. I tried EVERY treatment know to man and vet, with no success. Within 3 weeks of using her new DogLeggs, the 4+ year old granula disappeared and has not returned. She stopped wearing her "p.j.'s" in mid February.

She never offers to lick her feet except to clean them and we have seen no hint of a recurrence.

Thank you soooooo much!!! She was actually excited each night when we would put her "p.j.'s" on and we are totally granuloma free.
The vet was in awe when I told him how she was cured!.

Thanks again.

My dog is older and has bad arthritis of the back legs. She is using her elbows more to get up from the ground and has worsened her lick granulomas to the point of bleeding and excessive increase in size of the granuloma. Her DogLeggs have helped tremendously! They provide padding while recumbent and assist while getting up. Her granulomas are healed as well. The design is so good that initially, I affixed a thin day-liner on the inside of the DogLegg and applied ointment that maintained contact with the area. Best of all, she LOVES them. She really likes wearing them and they fit wonderfully, not constricting or rubbing her in any places. She's a very intelligent husky/shepherd and she becomes very happy when she sees me picking them up to put them on, knowing that they are going to make her life easier! Thank You Dog Leggs! They are very much worth the money!

Kozmo

Kozmo and I wanted to take a second to send you our heartfelt thanks.  The Carpel braces are wonderful.  They fit great and give Kozie much needed support.  When I returned home Thursday, the FedX delivery had been made. I put the braces on Kozie before I got her out of the truck.  When her feet hit the ground it was the first time she had put any weight on her left foot all week.  It was truly remarkable.  With her Addison's disease and related medical problems, I really didn't know what to expect and this was more than I could have hoped for.

Thank you so much for a wonderful product and quick service.  God Bless.

Bianca, Victoria Australia

I just want to say thank you for your wonderful product. For a long time, my dog Bianca didn’t move around much. She mainly lay on her bed and slept. We would take food and water to her as she lay because it was too difficult for her to stand for even a few minutes. After about a week of wearing the DogLeggs, she actually walked around the yard and started barking at the birds. We were so happy as she hadn’t done that in such a long time. Every day since she has become more and more active and we are starting to see the old Bianca. Again, from all of us, thank you.
Oh, we need a second set because she can’t be trusted. The minute I take them off to clean them, she rips her bandage off and heads straight for the hard rough tiles and sits right down, ignoring anything we say.

Thanks again

Casey, Celestine IN

Casey, our yellow lab, has no more swollen elbows thanks to DogLeggs! I put them on her 1/28/08 and within one week, there was no more swelling. The scabs are slowly starting to heal up also. I think she likes them as she has never tried to take them off. She also walks with more glee! Thank you so very much! Sincerely, Pam Allen P.S. I gave your brochure to our vet so he can pass along the info. to those who need it.

A Truly Great Product!

A Truly Great Product

My wife and I have battled Hygroma on our 10 year old Irish Setter for almost 4 years. We have tried wrapping his legs, ace bandages, 100's of boxes of gauze and tape, socks, collars and even duct tape. Your product has done more to help our pup in one month than we have been able to accomplish in years. He's much happier and so are we. Thanks for a truly wonderful product.

Guy, Carrollton TX

Hi....I ordered Dog Leggs in August (2008) for Guy, our Aussie Mix who had chewed his legs. We lost him to nasal cancer last week and are grieving mightily but the DogLeggs helped part of him stay very comfortable during the last weeks of his life. If you ever need a sales rep in Dallas to help you sell this great product, let me know!!!!

Chelsey

Chelsey has been wearing the product for 2 weeks now and what an improvement! Her callous was very bad and now it has shrunken so much that you can't see this protrusion sticking out of her leg when you look at her and we even think she is in less pain because she seems so much happier and has more energy. We cannot thank you enough for inventing this.

We thought she would fight us and try to take it off but she doesn't mind it and still runs in the yard with it on. Somedays we are speechless and I think I'm going speechless again right now.......
