Our 10 year old Rottweiler, Greif, had large elbow calluses and severe arthritis in both elbows. Greif developed a hygroma (acute inflammatory swelling) in one elbow and foreleg to his toes. Our veterinarian suggested we try to adapt a human kneepad to fit Greif or perhaps padding and wrapping his leg with vet wrap to protect his elbows from the hard surfaces he liked to lie on. He further explained that he had never seen anything successfully stay on a dog and work for the treatment of hygroma and wished us luck. Once this condition is diagnosed, our vet explained, it rarely goes away. A dog with hygroma would have some sort of swelling the rest of his life.
Once home, Schön pulled out Polartec® and developed the first pair of DogLeggs. Greif willingly wore them. The morning of the second day of wearing his new “leggings,” the swelling in Greif's leg was reduced by half, by the end of the 5 days, the swelling was gone! Greif continued to wear his DogLeggs full-time. We discovered another benefit of DogLeggs, the warmth and constant protection to his elbows, gave Greif more mobility and less pain. Soon Greif, who had not been able to make the one block walk to the bus stop in the morning to see our daughter off to school, was walking without limping and had a definite spring in his step.
Greif regained his interest in playing with the tennis ball and playing with our other dog, actually running and playing for the first time in two years! Our veterinarians were amazed!
The use of all DogLeggs' products by animals must be supervised and may require training on the part of the owner/caretaker to insure proper use. All DogLeggs products are able to be removed by dogs, this is a safety measure. If a dog becomes entangled due to wearing of the garment, it must be able to free itself without harm.
